Currently both America and China face problems of economic disparity and corruption.  The difference in economic trends is as striking as the common problems.  America is facing continuing recession while China faces the limits of rapid growth.  Politically the two countries seem perched on a divide described by Fukyama as 'The End of History' which he has either clarified or changed as a result of China's success......more here - quote Fukyama.....   In terms of civic life, one wonders if America's tolerance for seemingly 'wacky' unchecked free speech and openness to the internet (especially for children) might present as important limitations as the Chinese intolerence of public dissention and their restrictions on the internet.  It looks like there is a ditch on both sides of the road.

In any event, it looks like much of the future, of the two countries, and the world as a whole, will be most heavily influenced by these two countries, their histories and cultures, and their near-term choices.....so it behooves all of us to observe, learn, and play what ever roles come to us to serve the future with all the good character we can muster.

I have scolded her for not controlling her emotions. I feel heavy-hearted and apologize as the chair of the company, Cho Yang-ho said. His daughter also has publicly apologized for the incident. Chinese 'Tiger' Mothers

What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you're good at it. To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work, which is why it is crucial to override their preferences. This often requires fortitude on the part of the parents because the child will resist; things are always hardest at the beginning, which is where Western parents tend to give up. But if done properly, the Chinese strategy produces a virtuous circle. Tenacious practice, practice, practice is crucial for excellence; rote repetition is underrated in America. Once a child starts to excel at something whether it's math, piano, pitching or ballet he or she gets praise, admiration and satisfaction. This builds confidence and makes the once not-fun activity fun. This in turn makes it easier for the parent to get the child to work even more. By AMY CHUA

Since 1990 the NIH has funded several small studies on the effects of qigong exercises for sufferers of neurological disorders, arthritis and other ailments. One study found that people over 70 years old gained more strength and cut their risk of accidental falls by nearly half after practicing tai chi. Larger studies are in the works.
