Overview
Storytelling is perhaps the most engaging and most powerful
and most accessible of the arts integration strategies. As humans we are 'meaning makers' and stories are basic
to this need.
Recent research demonstrates that stories are more effective than statistical data, and this
was demonstrated with statistical data! If we can frame our academic content in a story form we can engage students
and help them learn and remember.
Involving students themselves in storytelling creates high levels of engagement,
and, by serving others, in character development. Stories often highlight the good character people, and in that way
also guide character development.
Stories are often not so true as memorable, and that is a problem. So,
using stories to stimulate and guide good writing needs to involve inquiry and good research, preferably with primary documents,
arts, and artifacts.
