WOOD Makes Music! 2013(Link) January 2013 The WOOD Makes Music! Story WOOD Makes Music! is an experiential marimba-making craft activity and program that connects Science with the Arts. I had just begun exploring various avenues for making my own wooden xylophone, the marimba, while wanting to create a child-friendly version of construction to add to my family audiences programming. When I saw the Franklin Institute Science Museum's (Philadelphia, PA) ad in the paper for an open call to artists to audition for the national touring exhibit that was coming to Philadelphia, "What Makes Music?," I took all of my wood exploration ideas and findings and went down to the Franklin Institute Science Museum to audition. It just looked like a heap of scrap wood laid out across the table with two hand-made mallots (strikers) that were wrapped at the striking tip in African fabric, somewhat looking like little wooden dolls. It really was quite hilarious, as I think back, the puzzled look, some amused, on the audition panel's faces, "What the?!" I went through the pile of wood and selected various pieces of wood and laid them out as the keys across two other pieces of wood that were serving as the frame of the marimba. I began going up and down my improvised keys, striking the wood, with the mallot: Click-clackety-clack-click! Click-clackety-clack-click! Nothing. Just a bunch of wood clicking, non-musical ticking sounds. Then, I turned the two pieces of wood that were positioned as frames on their sides that had been lined with foam rubber. Again, running the mallots up and down the keys. Boh-nee-dee-dee ding! Boh-nee-dee-dee ding! Boh-nee-dee-dee ding! Harmonic, musical sounds just rang out from those same pieces of wood that had just went click-clacktey-clak-click! It was like magic! The panel was startled by the sound, one jumped up, eyes wide open, "How did you DO that?! So, WOOD Makes Music! began as my playful response to the national exhibit, What Makes Music?
